Review the Web Sites of Your Competition

Certainly you remain aware of activities involving your competition and how they may be seeking to gain a competitive advantage. With that said, when was the last time you checked out the web sites of your main competition? It’s safe to say that the objective of your web site is for visitors to either enlist your services or purchase your products. This, however, is also the primary objective of your competition.

Have your competitors updated or redesigned their site? Have they added additional services or changed their product offering? You are all competing for the same business and any company that has enhanced their design or improved their product mix is looking to differentiate themselves and improve their “piece of the pie.”

I’m not saying that I believe you must step outside of your core business in order to be successful. Adding additional services to your web site may be contrary to your the scope of your business. I do believe, however, that a web site that is out of date from a design perspective has the potential of sending business directly to your competition. We are visual creatures, and an updated web site that is fresh and vital attracts attention and can have a positive effect on your bottom line.

As you consider your competition, perhaps you are mindful of a company whose services are definitely lacking in comparison to yours. Their well designed website, however, is a successful example of an old advertising adage – “Sell the sizzle, not the steak.” Innovative design goes a long way in creating a strong and positive impression for this company. By updating your site, you can provide your clients with the sizzle – and the steak. But… that’s a discussion for another day.
